2.22.1. General description management

The selector of control of the automatic transmission (automatic transmission) has 8 fixed provisions of the choice of various operating modes (fig. 2.43). For movement of the lever of the choice of transfers from situation P to other provisions the ignition key has to be turned in a provision of driving (situation — D), and the brake pedal has to be pressed.
Various control modes of the automatic transmission have the following appointments:
1) Р — Parking position of the selector. This situation should be chosen when you launch the engine or you stop the car on the parking. At installation of the selector in situation P car has to be completely stopped! In situation P transmission is mechanically blocked. At the parking surely use the parking brake.
2) R — the Backing. Before installation of the lever of the transmission in situation R the car has to be completely stopped.
3) N — Neutral situation. The engine can be started in this situation as any of transfers is not included. After a full stop of the car put it on the parking brake and transfer the transmission lever to situation N.
4) D — Driving. D is a normal situation when driving. The transmission automatically switches to higher or to lower transfer depending on speed and acceleration of the car. If situation D is chosen after situation R, the car has to be completely stopped.
5) 4 — the Lowest transfers. Automatic switching up or down between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th transfers. Switching to the 5th transfer is not made. Situation 4 can be used:
— at the movement on the hilly area;
— at the movement with the trailer;
— for increase in efficiency of braking by the engine.
6) 3 — the Lowest transfers. Automatic switching up or down between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd transfers. Switching to the 4th and
The 5th transfer it is not made.
Situation 3 can be used:
— at the movement on the hilly area;
— at the movement with the trailer;
— for increase in efficiency of braking by the engine.
7) L — the Lowest transfers. Situation L should be chosen in that case when you want to conduct the car on the first or second transfer. For example, at the movement on the hilly area as situation L provides the best efficiency of braking with the engine.
8) W — the Winter mode. The program W joins and switched off by means of this button. Use this mode for start-off from the place and driving on slippery roads. When this mode is included, on the dashboard the corresponding control indicator burns.

The lever of the choice of transfers can be moved freely forward or back between provisions N and D. All other provisions are blocked by a latch (fig. 2.44) which is run by the button W of the blocking located on the transfer choice lever.
For movement of the handle of the choice of transfers from situation P to other provisions the ignition key has to be in the provision of driving (situation II), and the pedal of a brake has to be pressed.
For movement of the lever forward or back between provisions R and N, and also between provisions D, 4, 3 and L it is necessary to press this button.

       PREVENTION
Hold a leg on a brake pedal while you move the handle of the choice of transfer to other situation!

If the lever of the choice of transfer is blocked in parking situation (R), it can be unblocked manually. For this purpose it is necessary to perform the following operations (fig. 2.45):
— to turn the ignition key in situation II;
— with effort to press the SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE button (for this purpose it is possible to use a pen, the screw-driver, etc.) and to move the lever of the choice of transfers from parking situation (R) to situation N.
If to press an accelerator pedal to the full, passing to the provision of full acceleration, the transmission will automatically choose lower transfer if it is admissible from the point of view of the frequency of rotation of the engine. This mode is called kik-Down.
On reaching the maximum speed for the transfer chosen now or in case the pedal of an accelerator is released from situation "kik-Down", immediately and higher transfer will be automatically included. Kik-Down should be applied to achievement of the maximum acceleration, for example when overtaking.
The automatic transmission is supplied with the blocking device which reduces the frequency of rotation of the engine and saves fuel. The principle of action of blocking consists that at the choice of the 3rd, 4th and 5th transfers the hydrotransformer of transmission is switched-off. This blocking can sometimes be felt as one more switching of transfer.
The module of management of the automatic transmission also has adaptation function, i.e. defines style of driving of the driver — as quickly the driver presses an accelerator pedal — and adapts sensitivity of an algorithm of gear shifting to a concrete current manner of driving.
